George Whitman: Owner Of Shakespeare and Company Bookstore In Paris, Dies At 98

It's rather hazy in my head, I'd been to Europe 2 or 3 times in the late 60s and early 70s. But I'd probably been to Paris twice and once went into Shakespear­e and Company with my traveling companion.



George Whitman immediatel­y left us in charge of the bookstore and went out on an errand or to go to lunch even though he didn't know us from Shakespear­e himself! When he returned, we went on our way.



We both marveled at how trusting he was and I can certainly attest to his eccentrici­ty.



Mr. Whitman, you will be missed even after your long life.
