Dear Religion... Yours, Science: The Joke That Needs to Go Away

Religion has been an inspiration to many of the world's creators of music, literature and the graphic arts. And so has other forms of mythology.

But, to take as an example which I have been concerned with in recent years, when Blake asked the question "And did those feet in ancient times, walk upon England's mountains green, and was the Holy Lamb of God on England's pleasant pastures seen" referring to the legend that Jesus visited England as a child with Joseph of Arimathea:

touching as the thought may be especially to the English, the answer has to be a resounding no! It's absurd as are also all the legends and dogmas of the Church and other religions.

Religion may have something to teach us about art and mythology but, in this day and age, it has not been a benevolent force IMO.

Looking at the actual history of religion, it's impossible for me to accept that it should be put on an equal footing with science.

Only to the extent that organized religion advocates for the objective revelation of fact and thus aligns itself with demonstrable truths can it retain its validity. Because so much of what passes for "religion" is built on nothing but blind faith, hearsay, and superstition, religion all too often operates as a destructive force in the world. Sadly, even "great" art has been contaminated by propaganda that undermines its ultimate value in human civilization.

Hi Joe,

Might I ask you to to elucidate further on what religion has ever done "to align itself with demonstrable truths"?

I'm not trying to be argumentative but it seems to me that the function of all religion has to do with control, fable, and propaganda and not truth.
