Steve Schmidt, McCain Campaign Manager: Religion Could Kill The GOP

Mr. Schmidt made these comments in a speech to the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay group trying to affect the Republican party from within. (Like Newt, he has a gay sister.) In other words, the L.Cs is a group that is heavily into denial! It remains to be seen if the Repubs can ever divorce themselves from their ties with religion or their anti-gay bias but so far, either option seems far from the GOP's agenda.

Right now, their activity du jour has to do with Tea Parties and "teabagging" (which I'm sure they are expert at!) and I'm sure they are trying to protect the "poor" (themselves) from high taxes! They've had a free ride for 8 years and now they object. More "patriotism?

I'm also not sure why the Obamas want to pardon all those employees at Gitmo who were just "following orders" in the really "benign" (no torture!) interrogation of terror suspects. In doing this, Barack is putting himself in the same category as these other creeps. And, I might add, I don't understand the consistent appointments oƒ those who are supposed to get us out of the present "recession" with those who got us into it. (Geithner, Summers, Allison.) So far, they've only succeeded in throwing away more taxpayer dollars.

Though I don't regret voting for Obama (would McCain have been any better?), I have been rather disappointed in many of his subsequent actions.

I don't think the LCRs are into denial; they're going for a party that talks the talk of limited government, even if it doesn't walk the walk, and are trying to change their gay problem from within. So they're part of the solution, not the problem. Externally-imposed morality is not limited-government, and is not Christian. And the Pugs also have this tendency to preach for both lower taxes and more war...which are incompatible.

If the GOP ever changes its attitude toward gay rights, it won't be because of the Log Cabins but more likely because of public pressure.

The "Tea Party" idea is another example of the Repugs' phony usurpation of the pre-Revolutionary War Boston Tea Party and, as far as I can see, it fell, almost unobserved, with the world's attention distracted by one Susan Boyle!

The GOP has been trying all its old tricks which are no longer working and, till it learns some new tricks, has nowhere to go.

Since the Bushies have used the mother of all bait-and-switch snow jobs to get us into a hugely expensive war in Iraq which we should never have started (and yes, you can't lower taxes at the same time without impoverishing the country which they have done.) we are now having to try to get us out of this morass. I have to agree with Joe Ford that the Obamas are not, so far, handling this very well but not being an economist, I wouldn't try to advise anyone about how to handle it.

I'm not sure that even "real economists" know what to do!
